Comment: This book is by far the best book I ever read. I initially read the book when it first came out. After seeing the movie recently, I want to read it again! The movie can only capture a glimpse of the book. It's so good!!!

Comment: Heartwarming..... Kinda makes me want to get a puppy but Im hesitant because I know my heart will break when I lose it. Its a reminder of what animals teach us. They are angels in disguise.

Comment: i can usually finish a book in 2 to 5 days. this one took me almost a year. as a dog lover and owner these owners made me ill.

Summary: Grogan clearly has no idea about dogs!
Comment: I have never been so frustrated by a book in my life. John Grogan got a dog, assuming that, just because it was a Labrador, the dog would be a model canine citizen - like something out of a Disney movie. He did not really bother researching the breed at all before getting poor Marley. Then, when the dog does not live up to his expectations, he writes a book portraying himself as the amazing owner of a terrible dog. As someone who took on a very hyperactive puppy and trained it to be happy, obedient, and wonderful companion, I was appalled by the manner in which Grogan portrayed this dog. For starters, dogs are pack animals, and as such should not be left to sleep in the garage alone. Dogs should be with their pack! Then when the dog gets into things in the garage that he should not have done - Grogan clearly thought Marley was in the wrong and punished him, when in truth the poor thing was lonely, scared and very bored. Grogan was in the wrong in this (as well as most other) situation. As for saying that the dog, on some occasions, looked so sorry for himself that they couldn't beat him - erm - well, no dog should be trained by beating! How would he like it if he were beat every time he did not meet someone else's ridiculous, over-the-top expectations?
Any then - to top it off, Grogan uses archaic evidence to determine that the dog must have a mental disorder and really should be put down - but oh what a good owner he was for persisting with such a terrible dog! There was nothing wrong with Marley that a GOOD training professional, consistency, and loving care could not have helped. He was mischievous at most, and deserving of much better treatment than he got.
Furthermore, I feel that the author uses Marley as a thin veil for really just telling us about his otherwise dull life. I would have preferred a book that was more about Marley (and not just about what a terrible dog he was) and less about the boring Mr., Mrs., and offspring Grogan.
Marley is far from the worst dog! I have met worse, and I am sure the trainer we work with, who has rehabilitated many dogs faced with euthanasia, has met dogs that could make Marley look like the extra from a Disney movie that Grogan clearly wanted.
This is, without doubt the worst book, especially for a true animal lover. I have no idea how so many people gave it so many stars - I would have given 0 if it were possible.
